Now that you have found your dream home, it is time to plan the packing process. Start early so you have ample time to sort through what you have accumulated over the years. The less you have to transport, the easier the moving process will be.
General Packing Guidelines
- Pack items that are least used in your household first.
- Clearly mark fragile items for your movers.
- Pack one room at a time, and label each box indicating its contents and target room.
- Use smaller boxes for heavier items (like books or files).
- Ensure boxes are taped securely along top and bottom seams.
- Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top within each box.
Items Not to Pack
Movers will not transport items classified as dangerous or hazardous. Dispose of these properly prior to your move or make alternate transport plans:
- Paints and paint thinners
- Batteries
- Aerosol cans, bleach, and cleaning supplies
- Pressurized tanks (e.g. propane tanks)
- Loaded firearms and ammunition
- Gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable chemicals
- Perishable foods in glass jars
Packing Materials You Will Need
- Cartons: Ensure cartons are structurally sound with intact corners and covers.
- Packing Paper: Use clean packing paper instead of newsprint. The ink on newspaper can easily rub off and damage your belongings.
- Bubble Wrap and Tissue: Excellent for wrapping delicate or fragile items.
- Packing Tape: Use strong plastic tape (1.5 to 2 inches wide). Masking tape is not recommended.
- Markers & Scissors: Use black markers to label each box clearly.
Tips for Specific Items
Computers & Electronics
Make backup copies of all important computer files. Disconnect all cables, wrap them individually, and label them. If possible, pack electronic components in their original product boxes. Otherwise, wrap them in plenty of bubble wrap and pack them in sturdy, cushioned boxes. Remove ink cartridges from printers before moving.
Glassware & Stemware
Wrap each glass individually in packing paper, tucking the paper corners inside the glass. Nest glasses inside each other in stacks of four, wrap the entire stack in paper, and tape it securely. Place these bundles upright in a carton lined with crumpled paper at the bottom. Pack stemware separately, and clearly mark the boxes **"Fragile - Glassware"**.
Dishware & Plates
Line the bottom and sides of your carton with wadded paper. Place a plate in the center of packing paper, fold paper over it, place a second plate on top, and repeat up to four plates. Tape the bundle securely. Always place plates in the box on their edges rather than flat. Fill empty spaces with wadded paper to prevent movement, and mark the box **"Fragile"**.
Lampshades
Wrap lampshades in packing paper and nest them together in a dedicated box. Do not pack other items in the same carton. Silk or very delicate shades should be packed individually in their own boxes with protective tissue paper.
Pictures, Paintings & Mirrors
Place an "X" of masking tape across the glass of framed pictures to hold it in place if it breaks. Wrap smaller pictures in bubble wrap and place them upright in cartons lined with towels or blankets. Large mirrors and valuable paintings should be packed in specialized flat crates provided by your moving company.
